Minnesota Historical Society Grant

On Saturday, October 23, the Hermantown Historical Society will accept a Historical and Cultural Heritage grant from the Minnesota Historical Society.
You are invited to join us sometime between 1:00-4:00 as we kick off our project and celebrate the state's funding of our efforts in preserving our community's heritage.
At 2:00, Representative Mary Murphy will present the society with a check in the amount of $4,877.

Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants are made possible by the Minnesota Legislature from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund created with passage of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution in November 2008. The grants are awarded to support history projects and historic preservation across the state.

The Society will award a total of $6.75 million in Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants during the 2010 and 2011 fiscal years.
Grants are available in three tiers: Small or "Fast Track" grants of $7,000 or less, Mid-Size grants between $7,000 and $50,000, and Large grants of more than $50,000.

The Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant is limited to our following project: Catalog Collections Using Past Perfect (technology program). The project will include the following:

  1. Creating a PastPerfect database containing provenance and other pertinent data on each object/archival item.
  2. Take a high-resolution photo or scan each item.
  3. Maintain both a digital and hard-copy back-up of all information.
  4. Correctly label all items.
  5. Properly store items not on exhibit.
  6. Correctly exhibit items used in the history center/museum.
  7. Prepare a deed of gift form for each item.

This is a project of enduring value because it will enable the society to digitally catalog, photograph, label and store/exhibit properly the 500+ items in their permanent collection. The project begins in November with a completion date of June 1, 2011.
